RelightAI: Fix Bad Lighting After the Photo Is Taken
A face in shadow with a bright background is the classic phone photo failure. RelightAI in Luminar rebalances light using depth. This guide shows how it works and how far to push it.

Depth, Not Brightness
Every phone gallery has a brightness slider, and every backlit portrait proves its uselessness: lift the face and the sky explodes. The the Luminar photo editor RelightAI works differently. It maps the depth of the scene, so the person in front and the world behind them get separate light decisions.
That separation is the whole trick. A face can gain a stop of light while the sunset behind it keeps every bit of its colour.
The Backlit Portrait, Rescued
Start with the subject control and raise it until skin looks naturally lit, then check the background has not greyed. If the background dulls, back off and let the balance control share the work.
Follow with the skin work in the Presets and Filters in Luminar: Build a Look, Then Make It Yours once the light is right. Retouching a badly lit face first is painting over a problem that light would have solved.
Landscapes and Interiors Too
Depth relighting is not only for faces. A foreground valley under a bright sky, or a room where the window outshines the people, are the same geometry. Treat the near and far as two exposures and balance them like a darkroom printer would.
Interiors reward restraint most. Raise the room until it feels like the room felt, not like a showroom. The Erase in Luminar: Remove People and Clutter From a Photo covers the global grade that should follow.
The Honest Limits
RelightAI cannot invent detail the sensor never recorded. A face in true darkness, or a sky blown to pure white with no texture, stays lost. What it does superbly is rebalance the far larger set of photos where the detail exists and only the light is wrong.
Shoot with that in mind: expose for the highlights, keep the face a little dark, and let relighting do the lifting later.

Quick Answers
How is RelightAI different from brightness?
Brightness lifts everything, including the parts that were already bright. RelightAI uses depth, so the near subject and the far background can be balanced separately.
Can it fix a backlit portrait?
That is its best case. A face against a bright window or sky lifts cleanly while the background holds, within the limits of what the sensor captured.
Does relighting add noise?
Lifting deep shadow can reveal noise in any editor. Moderate lifts on modern phone photos stay clean; extreme lifts on old, dark files will grain.
